I have always loved the Dixie Chicks….even before their 2003 controversy*. I was often teased because “the Dixie Chicks aren’t REAL country, they’re POP country”. *shrug* I just enjoy their writing, musicianship and female harmonies – all of which are expertly showcased on the hit Not Ready to Make Nice.
After a few years away from the limelight and the Dixie Chicks, sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire, were ready to get back into the studio with the creation of Court Yard Hounds. Amelita, out now, marks the Court Yard Hounds’ second album. Containing 11 new tracks, Robison and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison’s divorce. “I’ve been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things,” says Robison. “Now, I’ve opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world. I think it’s not only a more hopeful album, but it’s more… well fun.”
You can totally feel Emily’s freedom throughout the Amelita album. In Sunshine, the ladies sarcastically croon about the inevitable energy-draining friend who is perpetually negative - something many can relate to. Their answer? We call you sunshine…ha! gotta love it. My favorite track The World Smiles reminds us that life is about perspective. If we only seek out the gloom and doom that ‘s all we’ll see, but if we take the time to smile we’ll get to witness the world smiling back at us. Besides the clever writing, I also love the melody and twang of A Guy Like You….I don’t care what anyone says – this song is classic country (no pop to be found here!). All in all, Court Yard Hounds’ Amelita is a solid effort that is reminiscent of one of my favorite female groups, The Indigo Girls, with a bit of sass.
* If you have not seen Shut Up & Sing , the film that documents the group’s triumphant return after enduring years of backlash, it is a must.
