Focus on Good Deeds in the New Year!

Happy NYE Sunflowers!

This year, I’m setting a new kind of resolution and it’s all about doing good deeds. Inspiring me is the 100 Good Deeds Bracelet  – it’s both a fashion statement and a cause to encourage everyone to do a good deed.

The designer of these bracelets, Mary Fisher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Fisher_(activist), is an artist, author and HIV/AIDs activist, who has dedicated her life to working with women in developing countries. As the force behind the 100 Good Deeds Bracelet, Mary empowers women in Uganda, Zambia, South Africa, Rwanda, and Haiti, many infected with HIV, to help her make the 100 Good Deeds bracelet. This project gives women a way to support their families through earnings, while empowering them to also contribute to good deeds around the world. This non-profit provides economic and educational opportunities to women and girls across Africa and elsewhere. Proceeds from 1GD bracelets are reinvested in the program to provide more women and girls with more training in more countries.

Each bracelet is strung with 100 beads and is intended to be a continued reminder to do a good deed. Every time you go out of your way to perform a good deed, you move the bracelet’s rubber ring closer to the 100th bead. A good deed means we’ve gone out of our way to help someone and only counts if the deed remains anonymous. Each time you do a good deed, move the ring on the bracelet closer to the button.

I’ve joined the #DeedADay movement and my goal is to wear my bracelet and do a deed a day. I’d like to encourage my readers to join with me. Purchase yours today at http://shop.100gooddeeds.org/. Imagine if we all did a good deed a day, what a better place the world would be 😉

Will you join me in doing a #DeedADay? Which color bracelet do you like? Leave your sunshine below.

Prior to leaving for San Antonio, I had the pleasure of trying out LifeStraw® Go. Whether you are exploring the nearby nature trail or camping in the mountains, having access to clean drinking water is always a priority. This easy-to-use filtered water bottle converts microbiologically contaminated water into safe drinking water, removing 99.9999% of bacteria so you can rest assured that you will have clean drinking water on-the-go. The durable, lightweight bottle is ideal for a variety of users outside of the home, including hikers, runners and campers, and for everyday consumer use as I discovered:

LifeStraw® Go even fits perfectly in Baby Sunshine’s diaper bag – perfect for a stroll!

Now y’all know I’m not the outdoorsy type but having a water bottle that gives me access to clean water no matter where I am is hella convenient, especially now that I have Baby Sunshine in tow. Plus I love supporting companies that are committed to social justice and walk the walk in order to make a difference.

Not only does LifeStraw® Go provide you with clean drinking water, but LifeStraw®’s Follow the Liters’ cause marketing campaign harnesses the collaborative power of individuals to help solve one of the world’s most pressing issues – lack of access to safe drinking water for people in developing countries. Under the ’Follow the Liters’ campaign,  when a consumer purchases any LifeStraw® water filter, a portion of the funds are used to provide one school child in Africa with safe drinking water for an entire school year.

LifeStraw® is manufactured by Vestergaard a Swiss-based global company dedicated to improving the health of disadvantaged people with game-changing solutions that fight malaria, HIV/AIDS, diarrheal disease and neglected tropical diseases. The company is the largest producer of long-lasting insecticidal bed nets that prevent malaria under the PermaNet® brand, and its award-winning LifeStraw® water filters have been designed for individual, family and community uses.

Helping New Parents Survive with Little Remedies® (+ Giveaway!)

Happy Monday Sunflowers! I’m starting this week off courtesy of Little Remedies® New Parents’ Survival Kit. Our first few months as new parents was a whirlwind of monitoring, worrying and questioning . Babies are so vulnerable and as new parents, it’s hard to know when and how to give your baby some relief. For Baby Sunshine, the first culprit of discomfort was gas. It broke our hearts to watch her grimace in pain as air bubbles attempted to pass through her tiny body. She eventually grew out of it as her digestive system matured but the Little Remedies® New Parents’ Survival Kit would have definitely come in handy for that and many other baby well-being concerns. The kit includes:

  • Infant fever/pain reliever
  • Gripe Water
  • Decongestant nose drops
  • Saline spray/drops
  • Nasal aspirator
  • Dosage syringe
  • BONUS travel bag

How cool is that? And all of the above contain no unnecessary additives, artificial flavors or colors. The saline drops and nasal aspirator have already proven a godsend for Baby Sunshine’s congestion.

As you may recall from this post, as a new mom it’s really important to me to that I pay all of the support and assistance that I received forward. Since my first trimester, I have been in search of an organization that offers support to expectant and new mothers in the DMV. I was so excited to finally connect with Mamatoto Village. Their mission to provide complimentary and low-cost maternal health services to women and their families during pregnancy through the first year of the child’s life immediately spoke to me. So when I received a box of these survival kits from Little Remedies, there was no doubt that I would be making a special delivery 😉 Stay tuned for more on my work with this amazing organization!

Batman, himself, will appear with the Batmobile from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Maryland National Capitol Park Police Prince George’s County Mounted Division will be on hand throughout the day.

Adding to the excitement will be food, music and an assortment of activities for “kids of all ages,” including moon bounces, carnival games, craft tables, face painting, temporary tattoos and shopping at vendor display tables –new this year. Attendees also can learn about volunteer opportunities with CASA to provide a voice to abused and neglected children in Prince George’s County.

“We are excited to expand our World of Wheels Family Festival, bring it to Hyattsville and make it a signature event,” said CASA of Prince George’s County Executive Director Ann Marie Binsner. “In addition to being a fundraiser, we hope it will be a ‘friendraiser’ that helps more members of the community become familiar with CASA’s mission, spread the word about our work and, ideally, get inspired to become volunteers.”

All proceeds from the event will directly support CASA/Prince George’s County. General admission is $5/person and a VIP package – which includes a bag with snacks, a drink, freebies from our sponsors and a moon bounce pass – is $10/person. Help Spread Awareness About Arthritis at the DC Purses with Power Event!

PWP-Logo (2)Oh how I miss being out and about! What better way to ease back into DC’s social scene than by attending the 2nd Annual Purses with Power Auction and Social!

Purses with Power is a “girls night out”themed event where attendees come together to network, socialize and shop while supporting a worthy cause and spreading awareness around arthritis. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and affects women nearly twice as often as men. This event is used as a platform to target women, spreading awareness and education to provide them with resources to prevent and control arthritis in partnership with the Arthritis Foundation. This year’s ultimate Girls Night Out is hosted by Dr. JC Hayward, a 40 year veteran anchor at WUSA9 and DC’s first female anchor, recently inducted into the National Association of Broadcast Journalists’ Hall of Fame. The night will include Bacardi’s signature cocktails, light refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, Red Velvet Cupcakes, a silent auction featuring a number of designer handbags and other great items, style tips from Super Fashion Stylist Shell B. Cheri, and entertainment by DJ Afuw.

As someone not personally affected by arthritis, I am looking forward to learning more about how I can join efforts to spread awareness about such a worthy cause. I am so honored to be among an amazing group of bloggers supporting this event. Please be sure to check out a couple of their posts to learn more about how arthritis impacts the lives of many:
